William Kallert, New Jersey Detective, Charged With DWI and Firing Gun in Car

William Kallert, a police detective in Jersey City, N.J., was charged with drunk driving and for allegedly firing his gun while he was in a police vehicle, it was reported.

The Jersey Journal reported that he fired the gun while he was off-duty, officials said Thursday.

“My administration is going to have a zero tolerance policy for this kind of conduct and we will pursue all possible charges in this situation with zero leniency, including theft of government property and official misconduct,” Jersey City Mayor Steven M. Fulop said in a statement obtained by the paper.

Kallert, who has been with the police force for several decades, was arrested early Thursday morning after police responded to an incident about a vehicle blocking a road.

A city official told NJ.com that he was suspended without pay.

The report comes just a day after a Camden, N.J., officer was arrested for tampering with evidence.

The Associated Press reported that Lawnside Police Lt. Lloyd Lewis was charged with four counts of official misconduct and tampering evidence.
