Beijing police are concerned that mobile phone text messages betweeen Beijing residents could trigger a nationwide celebration.
According to overseas Chinese news website Boxun, quoting a source from the Beijing Public Security Bureau, some Beijing residents are calling for a big celebration by lighting up firecrackers simultaneously throughout Beijing City when former Premier Li Peng and former Beijing Mayor Chen Xitong die. Rumors spread around recently that the two main leaders, responsible for the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989, have both fallen ill and are in critical condition.
Some sources disclosed that both Li and Chen fell into critical condition several times in the past year, especially, Chen suffers from later stage cancer and heart disease.
The source said that the related police department has been notified to be prepared as the regime is worried that Li's death could triggered a nationwide malicious joke campaign. Li was called the butcher of the massacre.
Boxun news said, a police chief disclosed that people want to use firecrackers to let the current rulers in Beijing know their assessment of these political figures. As the information, gathered by police, indicates some owners of Beijing high tech companies have decided to spend over 300,000 yuan (approximately US$43,880) to let their staff buy fire crackers on that day.
The police chief also said that they cannot ban people from using firecrackers as long as they don't violate the regulations. The police are targeting any outward expression, such as a protest or march.
