'Certainly a spectacular event that's quite gripping, quite compelling, and good entertainment'

BRISBANE, Australia—”Amazing,” said Graham Perrett, Federal Member for Moreton, when he attended Shen Yun Performing Arts opening night at the Concert Hall in Brisbane on Feb. 3.

Mr. Perrett has seen the New York-based Shen Yun before in both Brisbane and Canberra. He said he loved the performance and felt it was even better than last time, if that was possible.

“Very impressive!” he said. “I look forward to seeing next year’s performance which I feel will be even more compelling and entertaining.”

He said everyone is talking about Shen Yun and each year more and more people wanted to experience the performance.

“I’ve heard people talk about it in San Francisco and certainly here in Australia. So it’s certainly a spectacular event that’s quite gripping, quite compelling, and good entertainment,” he said.

Shen Yun has classical Chinese dance at its heart but also includes folk and ethnic dance as well as story based dances spanning China’s five millennia of culture and history.

According to the Shen Yun website “Through the universal language of music and dance, Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of Chinese culture. Its stunning beauty and tremendous energy leave audiences uplifted and inspired.”

Mr. Perrett felt uplifted after watching the performance, and particularly loved the glimpse into China’s long history and the breathtaking scenes appearing before his eyes.

“Incredible!” he said. “That time travel between 5,000 years and the modern day between Tibet and the plains of Mongolia, the ocean, villages—wonderful, great interplay between modern technology and those ancient dances. It’s been very spectacular.”

Shen Yun uses state-of-the-art digital backdrops which “create vividly animated settings, extending the stage and transporting the audience to a world where heaven and earth are one,” the website states.

“The backdrops are magical windows to completely different realms. From vast open grasslands in one dance to the stately elegance of Tang Dynasty pavilions in another; from dusty yellow battlegrounds to tropical beaches to Himalayan peaks to picturesque scenery of the Yellow River Delta—the digital projection infinitely expands and transforms the stage.”

Mr. Perrett said, “I am particularly intrigued by the use of the modern technology, the video screen and just that effortless travel from the dancers into the video presentation. It works well it takes you to the village or where ever they represent. Very impressive! … Quite exquisite! Really, very impressive!”

The unique orchestra blending traditional Chinese and classical Western instruments playing original scores is another feature that many audience appreciate. Mr. Perrett was very impressed.

“The music takes you on a journey as well. The music is probably the bit that complements the visuals perfectly,” he said.

Mr. Perrett felt Shen Yun had a moral message to the people of the world, a message that is both universal and eternal.

“Any good story is a timeless story and obviously that struggle to find a life that has purpose, a life that has dignity, a life that is noble, that is obviously a big part of the presentation tonight and I think it doesn’t matter where you live in the world you can hear that message.”

The website states, “Principles such as benevolence and justice, propriety and wisdom, respect for the heavens, and divine retribution, all come to life, washing over the audience. Originating from Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, these ideals are the essence of traditional Chinese culture.”

Mr. Perrett said Shen Yun was more than “quite exquisite” entertainment.

“I learnt new things in every single dance I saw tonight. Entertaining, but also educational,” he said.

Mr. Perrett said he would “Most definitely, most definitely,” recommend Shen Yun to everyone.
