RONKONKOMA, N.Y. (AP) — A politician is urging the federal government to allow a customs facility at Long Island’s MacArthur Airport so it could provide international flights.
Sen. Charles Schumer says airport officials already are at work on a plan to retrofit their facilities to allow an international customs gate there.
But according to Newsday ( ) they’d first need approval from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Schumer says several airlines have sent letters of intent.
Newsday reported previously that MacArthur has seen a 46 percent decrease in commercial flights since 2007.
Schumer says a customs facility could be a magnet for new carriers.
