The Syrian regime said it would potentially consider a cease-fire during the upcoming Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday, after months of intense battles across the country.
The cease-fire was proposed by United Nations-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi earlier in the week.
Jihad al-Makdisi, a spokesman for the Syrian regime, told the BBC that the government would consider Brahimi’s initiative to at least temporarily end the conflict.
“If we want the initiative to succeed, it is not enough for only the Syrian [government] side to be bound by it,” he said. “But at the same time, I would say that calming down the situation is in the interest of the Syrian government because we support a political solution and dialogue under this umbrella without preconditions.”
He stressed that the rebels would also need to be involved in the talks.
International efforts, including resolutions in the U.N. Security Council, aimed at putting an end to the crisis have failed.
Brahimi warned that the conflict threatens the whole Middle East. “Either it is solved, or it gets worse … and sets [the region] ablaze,” he stressed, according to Al-Jazeera.
