The Saudi woman who arrested after she was caught defying a the conservative kingdom’s ban on driving was released, according to a Twitter posting from a rights group.
Manal al Sharif, 32, was stopped more than a week ago while she was driving and was detained. She also uploaded a video of herself driving to the site YouTube, which received more than 500,000 views before it was taken down.
Women2Drive, a rights group she works with, tweeted that she was "released from jail" on Monday.
“We were informed today of the decision to free Manal on bail. The procedural steps towards her release are under way,” her lawyer, Adnan al-Saleh, told AFP. He added that she made an appeal to King Abdullah to release her.
Women in Saudi Arabia are not banned by law from driving, but they cannot obtain a license to drive and cannot take public transportation. They have to get around using a personal driver or by a male driver.
"We have a saying," she told CNN before she was detained. "The rain starts with a single drop. This is a symbolic thing.""We are not doing anything that is breaking the law," she added.
