The 14-year-old girl who was shot by the Taliban in Pakistan last week has been flown to the U.K. to receive medical treatment. Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head on the way home from school last Tuesday in apparent retaliation for a diary she kept, during the period in which the Taliban controlled Swat Valley.

She is being flown to the UK because she needs bones in her skull to be repaired or replaced, according to a statement from Pakistan’s military. 

“Accordingly, the panel of doctors recommended that Malala be shifted abroad to a U.K. center, which has the capability to provide integrated care to children who have sustained severe injury,” it said. 

“Pakistan has arranged with the United Arab Emirates for a specially equipped air ambulance, which will be used to transfer Malala to the U.K.”

Malala was the author of an online blog she kept for the BBC, in which she describes the Taliban’s policies of closing girls’ schools in Swat in 2009. 

Gunmen stopped her school bus in her hometown of Mingora and shot Malala. The attack prompted widespread condemnation in Pakistan, and authorities offered a reward of US$112,000 for the capture of her attackers. 

U.K. Foreign Secretary William Hague said she would be welcome in the U.K. “The public revulsion and condemnation of this cowardly attack shows that the people of Pakistan will not be beaten by terrorists,” he said in a statement. “The U.K. stands shoulder to shoulder with Pakistan in its fight against terrorism.”
