Mexican authorities say they arrested a suspect in connection with the killing of two American citizens in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

The city, located on the border between the United States and Mexico, has one of the highest murder rates in the world. Approximately 2,500 murders were recorded last year in the city, which has a population of 1.5 million.

Reports say the suspect is a member of a local Ciudad-based gang. The victims were a U.S. Consulate worker and her husband. The third person was a Mexican national killed after they were leaving a birthday party several weeks ago. Authorities handling the case say the motives for the murder are unclear.

A report by the Associated Press said the suspect is the leader of a gang that has connections to the Juarez drug cartel.
