Hindu religious festival turned bloody as more than 100 people were killed in a stampede in the Indian southern state of Kerala over the weekend, according to the BBC.

Another 44 people were injured in the incident that was apparently caused by a car accident.

Officials in the government of Kerala were heavily criticized for poor planning and response.

“I think it is government negligence that has caused this incident,” Karnataka Law Minister Suresh Kumar told the Indian Express.

According to the newspaper, the cause of the stampede was due to a lack of crowd control, poor lighting, and other preventable reasons.

Last April, at least 63 people died in a stampede of thousands of Hindu devotees at an ashram in a small village in Uttar Pradesh in northern India. The crowd panicked after a gate collapsed at the ashram.
