Just a day after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake rocked the New Zealand city of Christchurch on, an aftershock hit the city on Tuesday, hampering cleanup efforts.
The aftershock, which was confirmed by the U.S. Geological Survey as 5.0-magnitude and 1 km (0.62 miles) deep, did not cause any damage or injuries on Tuesday, according to AFP.
The quake that hit Christchurch on Monday killed at least one person and damaged buildings.
The series of quakes hit the devastated city in the country’s southern island just four months after a massive, 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck. That quake killed at least 180 people.
Monday’s earthquake caused as much as $5.4 billion in additional damages, catastrophe-monitoring company Eqecat told Reuters.The company added that the three quakes in the past six months caused between $15 billion to $23 billion in damages.
