NEW YORK—A shooting took the lives of two firefighters and injured three others at a fire in Webster early Monday morning.
Lt. Michael Chiapperini and Monroe County 911 dispatcher Tomasz Kaczowka were killed.
The fire amplified as a result, destroying four homes and a motor vehicle, while damaging four other homes.
“All of our thoughts and prayers go to the families and friends of those who were killed in this senseless act of violence,” Gov. Cuomo said in a statement.
Volunteer firefighters Joseph Hofsetter and Theodore Scardino, and an off-duty police officer from Greece, N.Y., John Ritter, were injured during the shooting.
The gunman was killed by a gunshot wound. It was unclear whether the wound was from the police or self-inflicted.
“We stand with our partners in law enforcement to ensure that lethal weapons are out of the hands of dangerous people, so that the brave New Yorkers who risk their lives every day to protect us are not exposed to additional danger,” Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman said in a statement.
“The contributions made by the fallen and injured officers in Webster will never be forgotten,” he said.
