The Obama administration will raise the U.S. debt limit after the Senate blocked a House resolution that sought to prevent the White House from raising it to $16.39 trillion, according to reports.
The bill was voted down on Thursday, with 52 in favor of killing the bill and 44 against the move, according to Politico.
Two Republican senators joined the Democrat ranks to vote in favor of killing the bill, while one Democrat voted alongside Republicans.
The GOP-led House voted last week to disapprove President Barack Obama’s proposal to raise the limit by $1.2 trillion.
“We should be working together to lower the debt, not having votes to increase it. But the president must be willing to face this crisis head on. He must be willing to acknowledge how serious this issue is,” Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Republican minority leader, said in regard to the vote on Thursday, according to transcript.
