Greg Raymer, a former World Series of Poker champion, was arrested in North Carolina in during a police sting.
A Wake Forest Police Department spokesperson told the station that he was arrested in a hotel after he responded to an advertisement posted by undercover police on a website used for prostitution, reported WTVD television.
Raymer, who was nicknamed the “Fossil Man,” won the poker contest in 2004.
“The locations prostitutes choose for this type of criminal activity vary and seldom remain the same for more than a couple of days at a time which makes enforcement difficult,” said Police Chief Jeff Leonard in a statement.
Five other people were arrested in the sting.
Police said that the arrest was carried out “as a pre-emptive measure to combat the nationwide growing trend of prostitution,” reported WRAL.
