An intoxicated policeman in South China killed a pregnant restaurateur, after learning the establishment did not serve milk tea.

Police officer Hu Ping, aged 33, visited the restaurant in Guangxi late on Oct. 28, and fired shots at the woman and her husband when he found out he could not have milk tea.

The woman, who was five months pregnant, was hit in the head and abdomen, and died after being hospitalized. Her husband survived with a shoulder wound, Sina News reported.

The Guiyang City public security bureau apprehended the officer as part of an investigation and confiscated his gun.

Internet users responded to the news with shock, discussing the issues associated with the police force’s unbridled power in communist China.

One Weibo microblogger commented: “It’s so terrifying. What made him so bold, not to mention how to regulate police use of guns?”

Another said: “Even a criminal doesn’t have enough guts to shoot an innocent pregnant woman in the head. Then think about those forced demolition events and the gunshots there. Who can say this is an isolated incident? [The police] do whatever they want, so there will be no peace in this country.”

A third remarked: “So far there isn’t a single police officer who has been severely punished for killing people with guns.”
