The total number of charter school students nationwide has risen above 2 million, up from about 1.5 million in the 2009–2010 school year.

NEW YORK—The number of charter school students in New York City increased by almost 10,000 over the past year, according to a new report.

The city’s school district now has the second-highest number of students in charter schools in the nation. New York City has just under half the number of Los Angeles, which has close to 100,000 students, according to a report published earlier this week from the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools measuring the 2011–2012 school year.

New York’s charter school students account for just 5 percent of the city’s 1.01 million students, a small number when compared to Los Angeles’ 15 percent, and third-ranking Detroit’s 41 percent.
