Marines T-shirt ban: A middle-school student in Illinois was ordered to remove a Marines T-shirt this week.

An Illinois student was told by his school to remove a U.S. Marines T-shirt and was threatened with a suspension if he failed to comply.

Daniel McIntyre, the father, told Fox News that he wants the Genoa-Kingston Middle School to take another look at its dress code after his son, Michael, was forced to remove it from sight.

The school took issue with the shirt’s interlocking rifles. The boy was then told to wear the shirt inside out.

“My son is very proud of the Marines, and, in fact, of all the services,” McIntyre told the network. “So he wears it with pride. There are two rifles crossed underneath the word ‘Marines’ on the shirt, but to me that should be overlooked. It’s more about the Marines instead of the rifles.”

McIntyre said his son wore the shirt several times to school before but authorities didn’t do anything.

“He was upset, he couldn’t understand it,” McIntyre continued. “He couldn’t understand why a teacher would make him do that.”

The Genoa-Kingston Middle School posted a statement on Facebook on Monday about the incident.

“We very much support the armed forces and were disheartened to learn of this matter through the media. The administration and school handbook agree that this shirt is not a violation of the dress code,” reads the statement.

It added that the school takes “school safety very earnestly and it needs to be recognized that is a topic that we also take very seriously and support our students and staff in providing a safe environment to learn, teach and work in on a daily basis.”

A commenter on the post, John Wayne Loudin, described the move to force the removal of the T-shirt as “disgusting.”

“I can’t believe we live in a country where someone actually finds a marine t-shirt offensive. If it wasn’t for the Marines, Army, Navy, and Air Force, we would have no freedoms at all,” he wrote.

Well you can’t deny that our freedoms are rapidly disappearing. This has become a country of one person’s values trumping society’s values. The country is in decline and will be until right thinking Americans put it back on the path to prosperity and freedom.

What “freedom” is disappearing in this case? The freedom to be a patriotic zealot for the country that you claim is limiting freedom? I’m lost…

OMG !!! How EFFING’ STUPID are some people ? The student should be allowed to wear any shirt that supports ANY branch of the military. Mr.Loudin is correct,“I can’t believe we live in a country where someone actually finds a marine t-shirt offensive. If it wasn’t for the Marines, Army, Navy, and Air Force, we would have no freedoms at all,” he wrote.” I think the PERSON that asked that young man to re-move or turn his shirt inside out, needs to have their head looked into. What’s UNSAFE about wearing a T-Shirt with two rifles crossed.? You tell me.

I can understand the school’s point of view because of the weapons pictured on the shirt. However being a former member of the military( U.S. Army) it is refreshing to see the support. In these times of what country and enemy are we going to be fighting next it is nice to see support from the general public especially the kids as they will be the ones to fill in the ranks later. If the shirt was more demeaning to the populus or a specific group I could support the school more however leave the kid alone for a simple infraction. Semer Fi!!!!!!!

Sounds like the teacher has an issue with the Military.

I think that school is stupid. kids should wear what they want. its a marines t shirt. I guess those people forgot that if it wasn’t for our veterans and military, they wouldn’t get to do what they like. that shirt isn’t hurting anybody.im a veteran and those people at that school should be ashamed of there selves.

How are pictures of crossed rifles on a T-Shirt offensive? Its not illicit drugs or cuss words, or nudity, the school teacher needs to rethink their profession.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pablito.king.5 Buzz Reyes

Okay, you find our shirts offensive? The crossed rifles are symbolic of
our service; every Marine is a rifleman and every Marine has the
ability to protect those who are in harm’s way. We are the United
States Marine Corps and we stand united in the service of our country.
Shame, shame on them. Paul Reyes, SSGT. USMC

Forget about which side of this silly issue at some nondescript school in Illinois. I truly couldn’t care less about the whole thing. But trip off of this, “pj” claims that the U.S. has become the “Socialist Republic of America” because he thinks kids SHOULD be allowed to wear shirts with guns on them supporting their home country’s military within their home country. Think this over for a while. No really, think about this… Is he claiming that socialist countries are anti-war or don’t support their own military? What is he saying? And “Enrique Carabello” agrees with this obtuse sentiment and apparently so do 17+ others making his the highest rated comment on this article. How bizarre!!!!
