Police in northwestern Montana said a man shot and killed the host of a hunting television show as the TV personality visited the gunman’s wife.
Gregory G. Rodriguez, the host of the Sportsman Channel show “A Rifleman’s Journal,” was in in the town of Whitefish on business, visiting the wife of 41-year-old Wayne Bengston, who shot him on Thursday night, according to The Associated Press. It was unclear what relationship Rodriguez had with the man’s wife.
The Missoulian newspaper reported that Bengston “brutally beat his wife” in the incident before taking his 2-year-old son to a relative’s home. The child was unharmed.
After that, Bengston drove to his home in West Glacier and apparently killed himself, the newspaper said.
Following the shooting of Rodriguez, police tracked down Bengston and saw his truck in his driveway. When they entered his home, they discovered his body with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Rodriguez was also the founder and head of Global Adventure Outfitters. Before that, he was a mortgage banker.
According to the “A Rifleman’s Journal” website, the show “chronicles the adventures of noted outdoor writer, outfitter and marksmanship instructor, Greg Rodriguez.”
“He travels the globe in pursuit of some of the world’s most coveted big game species,” it continues.
On the show’s Facebook page, there was an outpouring of support for Rodriguez, who had a wife and two children.
“Rest in Peace Greg,” reads one Facebook posting.
