Lance Stephenson, a Coney Island native and the Indiana Pacers second-round draft pick, was released on Monday after severely abusing his girlfriend and being arrested on Sunday night, according to reports.

Stephenson, 19, allegedly pushed his girlfriend down a flight of stairs at her home in Gravesend, Brooklyn at around 5 a.m., the New York Daily News reported. He was charged with assault, menacing, weapons possession, and reckless endangerment.

Jasmine Williams, his girlfriend and the mother of his child, told police that he also struck her in the head.

Stephenson was reportedly waiting outside their home at 5 a.m. because Williams would not return his phone calls.

"This wasn't the first time this happened," a friend, who works with Williams' father told the Daily News. "The father spoke to [Stephenson's] parents before. They said 'we aren't going to call the cops and mess up his career but this has to stop.’ Enough is enough."

Stephenson told authorities his 21-year-old girlfriend fell down the stairs.

"While [Williams] was laying at the bottom of said stairs, the defendant [Stephenson] picked up informant's head and slammed informant's head on the bottom step," the Brooklyn Criminal Court records stated, according to the New York Daily News.

Stephenson, who holds the state's high school scoring record and led Brooklyn's Abraham Lincoln High School to four city championships, faces as many as 12 years in prison if convicted. He is slated to appear in court again on Oct. 19.

Last year, the 6 foot 5 high school standout pleaded guilty on disorderly conduct charges making improper sexual advances toward a 17-year-old girl.

Stephenson was named the Rookie of the Year in the Big East after playing one season with the University of Cincinnati. Afterward, he was selected 40th overall by the Indiana Pacers.
