NEW YORK—Thousands of pay phones across the city, a relic of another age, are considered valuable infrastructure by city officials. A competition was launched, asking people to envision different uses for the phones.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other city officials announced the winning prototypes on Wednesday, and released visuals showing some of the designs. More than 125 submissions were received; 11 semi-finalists showed their designs to judges yesterday evening.
“From Wi-Fi hotspots and charging stations to alternative energy sources and community art installations, once again New York City proves to be fertile ground for launching groundbreaking ideas that set the global standard,” said Rachel Haot, the city’s chief digital officer, in a statement.
Another prize category will be decided by public vote. People can vote through March 14 here.
