The former president of Penn State on Thursday was charged in connection with the sex scandal that led to the conviction and sentencing of ex-coach Jerry Sandusky.

Graham Spanier, who resigned from Pennsylvania State University a year ago, was charged with conspiring to conceal information about child abuse involving Sandusky, as well as obstructing a police investigation into the case, perjury, and endangering the welfare of children.

“This is not a mistake, an oversight, or a misjudgment. This was a conspiracy of silence by top officials at Penn State, working to actively conceal the truth, with total disregard to the suffering of children,” state Attorney General Linda Kelly, who announced the charges against Spanier.

Former Penn State senior vice president for finance and business, Gary Schultz, and former Penn State athletic director, Timothy Curley, each face new charges as well, Kelly’s office said.

Spanier was forced to resign after charges were filed against Sandusky.

Spanier’s attorneys earlier told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Kelly’s office did not have a “scintilla of evidence” against the former university president.
