A former member of Florida A&M University’s band was sentenced to six months of house arrest and two years of probation for taking part in the hazing ritual that killed a band drummer last year.

Brian Jones, 23, was the first defendant to receive punishment for taking part in the hazing that killed Robert Champion, reported Orlando-based WESH.

Judge Marc Lubet said that Jones did not have a major role in Champion’s death.

Jones must also conduct 200 hours of community service. Initially, Jones pleaded not guilty, but two weeks ago, he entered a no contest plea.

Champion took part in a hazing ritual that involved walking down a bus aisle while being punched and kicked by senior band members. He ultimately died after sustaining injuries from the hazing.

Eleven other band members face felony charges in the hazing death, while one other band member faces a misdemeanor, according to Central Florida-based WDBO.
