Explosives and other weapons were found in the dorm room of a University of Central Florida student who is believed to have committed suicide Monday morning by shooting himself.
A fire alarm went off at the residence shortly after midnight. As police were on their way in response, they got a call that a man was spotted carrying a gun in the residence.
Investigators found the body of a student who had apparently shot himself. In his dorm room, they also found a handgun, an assault weapon, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), according to a notice on the university’s website.
Police have not found any manifestos or plans for attack, reported the Orlando Sentinel.
University spokesman Grant Heston told the Associated Press (AP): “We don’t believe there is any imminent threat to the campus.”
About 500 students were evacuated from the dorm, which is located in Knights Plaza near the Bright House Networks stadium.
The FBI and Orange County Sheriff’s Office are investigating.
Some worried mothers have posted on the university’s Facebook page.
“Pedro Porro please call us if you don’t have your phone call grandma if you don’t have my number memorized love mom,” writes one mother.
Sandra Marvin wrote: “Can an official from UCF please explain why the emergency alert system was not activated in a timely manner … No alerts were sent for over 3 hours after the incident.”
Marvin said her daughter, a resident at the dorm, was “caught right in the middle of this … if there had been a shooter she should have been alerted to protect herself.”
