Republican Congressman Joe Wilson of South Carolina issued a written apology for yelling, “You lie!” during President Obama’s address to both houses of Congress Wednesday night.

"This evening I let my emotions get the best of me," Wilson said in his statement of apology. "While I disagree with the president's statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the president for this lack of civility."

Interruption of Presidential Address

The reform of health care across the U.S. has been a heated issues over the last several weeks and months.

From heated exchanges in town hall meetings to public speakers getting shouted down, however, few expected such an event to occur during President Obama’s address on Wednesday night to both sessions of Congress.

As President Obama sought to amend issues between democrats and republicans on the issue of health care, define aspects of his health care plan, and refute opposing arguments being made about the bill, the president was interrupted by Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC).

President Obama said, "The reforms I'm proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally," at which point Congressman Wilson interrupted shouting, “You lie!”

During an interview with Larry King during the post-presidential address coverage on CNN, Senator John McCain  (R-AZ) said Congressman Wilsons actions were "totally disrespectful—[there's] no place for it in that setting or any other and he should apologize immediately."

Late during the evening, Congressman Wilson published his statement of apology on his website which subsequently crashed.
