Two people are dead after a powerful tornado tore through an area in Illinois in New Minden on Sunday.
A survey team from the National Weather Service said shortly before 5 p.m. that it confirmed preliminary EF-4 damage, and two fatalities.
The two people died when the tornado hit their home, Washington County coroner Mark Styninger said.
The elderly man and his sister died in their farmhouse in the town of New Minden, about 50 miles southeast of St. Louis.
The survey comes amid an outbreak of tornadoes across Illinois and Indiana, leveling numerous neighborhoods and injuring dozens if not hundreds. of people.
