New York’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) High Schools are not preparing students for success after graduation according to a report by Public Advocate Bill de Blasio released on Monday.
The report showed the academic programs that were the most numerous, such as arts, A/V technology and communications, and business administration, were not in line with fields that would have the most job growth over the next six years such as human services, health science, and information technology.
The report cites 50 percent of sample CTE schools fell into the persistently low-achieving ranks. As part of de Blasio’s six-point plan to fix these issues, he suggested the successful CTW schools partner with the struggling ones.
The six-point plan also included city and state service agencies to track job trends to make sure programs offered in the CTE are aligned with future jobs.
