A surfer in Northern California was in critical condition after being attacked by a shark on Tuesday.

According to local authorities, the 25-year-old man, who was not named, was pulled out of the water near Eureka and was rushed to the hospital, reported Eureka’s Times-Standard newspaper.

The man suffered a 14-inch-deep bite wound and other injuries from the shark. It is unclear what kind of shark was involved in the incident.

The attack took place near the North Jetty, a popular surfing area.

“I happened to be driving by as they were pulling him out of the water,” Jason Gabriel, who took the man to a nearby hospital before paramedics could arrive, told the Times-Standard.

“I was probably doing 110 mph, I’ve never seen anything like this in my life,” Gabriel continued.

The man is currently undergoing surgery.

Last week, a shark attacked a surfer in Southern California, killing him.
