Intertrust Technologies has filed a lawsuit against Apple for alleged infringement on 15 of its patents. The lawsuit covers many Apple products and services including iPhone, iPad, Mac PC, laptops, Apple TV, iTunes, iCloud and the App Store, according to their press release.
“Apple makes many great products that use Intertrust’s inventions,” said Talal Shamoon, Intertrust’s chief executive officer in the press release. “Our patents are foundational to modern Internet security and trusted computing, and result from years of internal research and development. We are proud of our record of peaceful and constructive licensing with industry leaders. We find it regrettable that we are forced to seek Court assistance to resolve this matter.”
Intertrust, based in Silicon Valley was founded in 1990 and is a joint venture between Sony, Philips and financial firm Stephens Inc. Holding over 250 patents (200 pending), the company develops and licenses software and technology to help entertainment and media companies protect copyrights.
Intertrust won a similar patent infringement case against Microsoft in 2004, with the latter settling the lawsuit with $440 million for rights to use Intertrust’s patented technology. The other licensees to its patents include Adobe, Samsung, Nokia, Motorola, HTC, LG and Vodafone.
