The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that the death toll for the fungal meningitis outbreak that has been linked to potentially contaminated injections is now 23.

The agency reported that now eight people have been killed by meningitis in Tennessee. There are now 13 new cases of fungal meningitis, upping the total to 285 by Sunday, it added.

The allegedly tainted steroid injections were produced by the Massachusetts-based New England Compounding Center, which was raided by federal law enforcement agents last week over the outbreak.

The company faces a lawsuit over the tainted medications.

“We want to pierce the corporate veil and go after the individuals,” lawyer Peter McGrath, who is heading a legal case on behalf of a plaintiff, told Reuters.

Both the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration have reported that they contacted around 97 percent of the people who were potentially exposed to meningitis.
