2 dead in police standoff: A man holed up in a Los Angeles home and fired on police during a standoff. In all, two people were left dead.
Two people were found dead in the Watts area of Los Angeles when a gunman holed up in his home with a woman and three children before firing on police, police said.
The woman is said to have been his wife and was injured sometime in the standoff, which started around 3 a.m., police told KABC-TV. Police arrived on the scene after responding to a domestic violence call.
Authorities found a man shot dead in a pickup truck that was still running before they saw the gunman, who ran into the house and started shooting at police from inside the building, which lasted around 45 minutes, officials told KTLA. None of the officers were hurt.
Police said that two children later ran out of the house. The children said their father shot their mother.
When SWAT officers entered the home at around 5 a.m., they found a dead Hispanic male, who is believed to be the gunman. It appeared he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said. They also recovered a weapon.
They also found a woman wounded nearby. She was rushed to a nearby hospital and is said to be in grave condition, according to KABC.
Officials also found a 1-year-old child unharmed in the home, the station reported. None of the children were hurt in the standoff.
Deputy Chief Robert Green said the children, who referred to the woman and man as “mom and dad,” will stay “in our custody until we identify relatives,” reported The Associated Press.
