DICE Software showcased gameplay from its upcoming warfare simulator Battlefield 3, showing highly-realistic graphics and gameplay. The game was demonstrated at the E3 2011 video game conference, giving fans a glimpse of what is becoming one of the most anticipated games of the year.

The game is powered by the newly-developed Frostbite Engine, equipping Battlefield 3 with one of the most sophisticated game engines on the market. This allows for stunning animations, with fluid, real-to-life character movements. DICE is focusing on bringing realism to Battlefield 3, giving players an experience unlike any other.

Characters in the game will interact with the battlefield and the environment similarly to how soldiers and civilians would act in an actual war setting. Meanwhile, advanced lighting and special affects will help bring each mission to life.

As displayed in teaser videos, Battlefield 3 will carry the destructible environments found in its previous installments. One scene in a gameplay video shows an earthquake rock a city the player is in. The streets beginning to crack as a building slowly crumples before smashing downward toward where they player is.

The maps are also highly expansive and detailed. This allows for non-linear play where gamers can approach the battlefield in any way they prefer, and encouraging tactical thinking.

The new gameplay mechanics and character animations will also give players new ways to interact with objects and characters on the battlefield. Among these will be the ability to pull wounded soldiers from the line of fire.

The beta version of Battlefield 3 is set for release in September and will be available to gamers who purchased Medal of Honor with a code. Everyone else will need to wait for the game’s official retail release in October.
