Ethan Connolly, a University of Delaware student, died after he was hit by a pickup truck while walking on Route 896 near Newark, the university said on Friday.

Connolly was a 19-year-old sophomore.

Daniel Bernstein, a freshman in the Lerner College of Business and Economics from New York City, was with Connolly and injured in the crash. He was taken to Christiana Hospital, with non-life-threatening injuries.

“On behalf of the university community, I would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to Mr. Connolly’s family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Bernstein, his family and friends,” said Dawn Thompson, interim vice president for student life, in a statement. “We are all deeply saddened by this tragic event and the loss of a member of our community.”

The students were hit at about 12:30 a.m. while walking across Route 896, near Gbc Drive.

The Delaware State Police is investigating the crash.
