Wins for the three leading clubs in last Saturday’s (Jan 19) matches keep them all in-range of finishing the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union Premiership League season in the prized top position to win the minor premiership race.

It is still tight at the top of the table with only 2 rounds out of 12 to go before the finals series. Newedge Club are leading on 38-points, with Leighton Asia HKCC (Hong Hong Cricket Club) and Abacus Kowloon (with a game in hand) are both five points behind on 33-points.

Meanwhile, Verizon HK Scottish is on 25-points; ONEwork’s Valley 18-points, as Borrelli Walsh Tigers and SCAA Standard Life CWB Rams bring up the rear on 14- and 11-points respectively.

With all seven teams in the league playing off in finals, each still has a chance to win the HKRFU Premiership title theoretically. But, as the saying goes: winning form is good form. The 4-week finals structure makes it beneficial to finish as high as possible, with the Minor Premiers getting a bye in the first week.

Newedge Club against SCAA Standard Life CWB Rams

Newedge Club playing SCAA Standard Life CWB Rams at HKFC piled on the points in the first half to lead 38-3 at half-time. In the second half the Rams contained Club’s play to maintain the score at 38 to 3 for the first 25 minutes. They attacked well and had many forages towards Cub’s line. But while the Rams were pressuring, Club’s Sebastien Alfonsi broke away to score making the score 43 points to 3 with 15 minutes remaining.

Five minutes later Club’s Jake Phelps and Alfonsi combined to score again and a successful conversion by James Hood pushed the score to 50-3.

After many attacking efforts, the Rams finally succeeded in scoring a consolation try and conversion with three minutes left on the clock. But Club came back again with another under-the-posts converted try from a move started by Tom Hayman—making the final score 57-10.

Other matches

Leighton Asia HKCC also had an easy victory over Borrelli Walsh Tigers at Aberdeen Sports Ground winning: 57-8.

The Verizon HK Scottish game against Abacus Kowloon at Shek Kip Mei was much closer with Kowloon just coming away with the win at 16-19.

Next fixtures

Leighton Asia HKCC meet Abacus Kowloon at Aberdeen Sports Ground; Borrelli Walsh Tigers play SCAA Standard Life CWB Rams at King’s Park; and ONEwork’s Valley play Verson HK Scottish at So Kon Po Recreation Ground. All matches are on Jan 26.
