The Toronto Blue Jays signed free agent infielder Maicer Izturis Thursday to a three-year contract, according to a report on MLB’s website.
The deal is worth $9 million and includes a club option for 2012 at $3 million.
The 32-year-old Izturis is a nine-year veteran, who has played the last eight seasons with the Angels.
Standing 5-feet, 8-inches tall he can play three infield positions. He will compete for time at second base with rookie Adeiny Hechavarria, though with the offseason having just started it’s possible Izturis could move into a utility infielder role. The switch-hitting Izturis is a career .273 hitter with 714 career hits in 791 games with 370 runs scored, and 91 total steals.
In an unrelated move the Blue Jays also acquired pitcher Jeremy Jeffress from Kansas City for cash considerations.
