HOUSTON—Jacqueline Penha should be described as a Shen Yun fan.
“I have seen Shen Yun many times. I come every year—sometimes twice a year. I love the show,” she said.
Ms. Penha, a senior banking professional, attended the Dec. 30 matinée at Houston Jones Hall for the Performing Arts. She said everyone should see Shen Yun.
“It gives you a sense of peace, a sense of elegance. When you see Shen Yun there is not a feeling—you have to come see it to understand the way I’m feeling,” she said.
Ms. Penha is from Haiti and said she saw similarities between her culture and the traditional Chinese culture that she saw in Shen Yun.
“We [Haitians] are very humble people. We’re very modest. We’re very respectful to our elders. We respect people. I am very fascinated by the Chinese culture, by their humbleness. Most of all the food! I love the way they raise their families, the way they respect others. They’re very humble,” she said.
According to the Shen Yun website, “the deeper spiritual core of the ancient culture, with its values of benevolence, honor, propriety, wisdom, and sincerity, as well as a reverence for the gods and the heavens, cannot be destroyed.”
“I know when you come to see Shen Yun, you will never leave the same. So, I recommend everyone come see the show. Bring you families, then just come and enjoy yourself … You will leave here very happy—peaceful. It is very elegant. This is a beautiful show. I love Shen Yun,” she said.
According to the program book,”When we put “Shen” and “Yun” together, it describes the grace, compassion, and sublime beauty of the heavenly realms that are conveyed through the gestures and expressions of our dancers. That is the essence of the name “Shen Yun.”
“It is terrific, superb, divine. It’s a beautiful show,” Ms. Penha said.
