LOS ANGELES—Lance Alspaugh, owner of Vintage Cinemas, and Victor Martinez, manager at Vintage Cinemas, were enchanted by the sold-out performance of Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on Jan. 25.
Vintage Cinemas is a popular old-fashioned movie theater with three locations in Southern California. Owner Lance Alspaugh has high standards for a quality vintage movie-going experience, and manager Victor Martinez loves his job so much has even been seen dressed up in full character costume to celebrate the opening of a film at the theater.
Mr. Alspaugh loved the performance. “I loved it. I was just telling my friend here that I enjoyed the simplicity of it. … Emotional, beautiful.”
Mr. Martinez also loved Shen Yun. “I really loved it, I cannot say enough about it.”
Shen Yun Performing Arts is based in New York, and its mission is to revive the five millennia of China’s divinely inspired traditional culture through music and dance.
Mr. Alspaugh thought the performance was simply beautiful and loved the colors. “It was so elegant, but so understated, not over the top. Just very, very elegant,” he said.
Classical Chinese dance is the main focus of a Shen Yun performance, while a live orchestra, interactive digital backdrop, ethnic and folk dances, and solo vocalists round out the experience.
From his perspective working in the film business, Mr. Alspaugh thought the production value of the show was brilliant. He thought the video effects were very well done. “They had it perfectly timed,” he said.
Mr. Alspaugh was enchanted by the Shen Yun dancers.
Victor Martinez said it was very educational and should be seen by everyone, especially children.
Mr. Martinez also thought it was good that Shen Yun helped people remember how much freedom of expression they have in the United States. “I think a lot of people forget that, and it’s good to remind people that not every place you can be artistic.”
Mr. Alspaugh said Shen Yun was a “must-see show” and said they would be back again next year.
