TAIPEI, Taiwan—The New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has toured the world over the past seven years and the show has become more and more popular. In particular, due to its exhilarating and exquisite performances, Shen Yun often draws a full house and it’s often hard to get a ticket. Many people in mainland China have also learned about Shen Yun’s popularity or seen Shen Yun’s performance on the Internet through anti-censorship software such as Freegate. Among them is a young student nicknamed Chen who currently studies at a university in China. He came from China to Taiwan to see the Shen Yun performance in Taipei along with his friends.

After seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company’s second performance in Taipei at a seat in an excellent location on the evening of Feb. 21, Chen expressed that he felt very excited about it.

He said, “In the mainland, I didn’t enjoy folk dance performance much. At most, I just saw it for a few seconds, and then I would feel bored. But it was not the case today, as the more I saw Shen Yun’s performance, the more I enjoyed it.”

“[Shen Yun] vividly performed the distinct characteristics of different ethnicities’ dances. Among them, I liked the program Inspired Dance of the Yi the most. It amazingly illustrated Yi girls’ tenderness and gracefulness, which I felt was great, as it presented something very unique and profound.”

As a student who has a liking for reading historic books, classics, as well as poems of Tang and Song Dynasties, Chen said he was very much interested in the performances of When Shaolin Monks Protected the Emperor and Sand Monk Is Blessed, as the dances were adapted from historic stories.

He explained, “I have never seen such performances. The Chinese authorities often boast about how wonderful the performing arts [in China] are, but basically they are simply hollow words. As to what is popular in China nowadays, he noted that it is a kind of street culture, such as hip-hop, etc.”

“I feel that what is presented by Shen Yun is very noble and splendid, as what they present can really touch one’s hearts and make us have a different feeling,” he added.

He concluded by saying, “Shen Yun is great. If possible, I may come over here to see its performance again.”
