MISSISSAUGA, Canada—With her background as a professional dancer and dance teacher, Lee Tovey knows what is excellent dance and she was delighted to see it at Shen Yun Performing Arts’ opening show at the Living Arts Centre on Thursday night.

“It’s beautiful, it’s beautiful,” she said, praising everything from the dancers’ training and flexibility to their posturing and techniques specific to Chinese dance.

“That’s all part of the Chinese style that is telling a beautiful history, and representing national values as well as traditional [culture],” she said.

Mrs. Tovey, who accompanied her husband, Mississauga city councilor Jim Tovey, to the show, is a former dancer who has danced with Ballet East and the Ontario Ballet Theatre and has done a great deal of television and video work as well.

In addition to the dancers’ excellent talent and ability, Mrs. Tovey took notice of how well they performed together.

“It’s as if their heart is one, so when everyone is dancing on the stage, the unity is beautiful. The floor patterns are precise,” she said.

New York-based Shen Yun is a world-renowned performing arts company that has been touring the world for the past six years.

Established in 2006, its mission is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture through exhilarating productions centered on classical Chinese dance and music.

Some of the features that distinguish Shen Yun from other performing arts groups include its live orchestra that combines classical Chinese and Western instruments in masterful fusion, its visual feast of original colourful handmade costumes, and striking digital backdrops that coordinate with the choreography on stage.

“The artistry of the show is beautiful because there is photography, music, costume design, choreography, lighting and staging. It’s a collaborative production,” Mrs. Tovey said.

“It is a first-class production and of course worthy of international touring,” she said.
