MONTREAL—Louis Fairbain, a Montreal-based real estate investor, watched Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company perform at the Place des Arts on Sunday Jan. 6.
“The show was fantastic; very well put together. I liked the costumes, the energy, and the whole stage presence was very nice,” Mr. Fairbain said of Shen Yun.
The Sunday afternoon performance was the last one in Montreal before the Shen Yun Performing Arts New York company leaves for Quebec City to perform on Jan. 8.
The New York-based Shen Yun takes its audiences on a journey from legends of the Chinese culture’s creation up to the present day through Chinese dance and music, as well as beautifully designed digital backdrops and colourful costumes.
“In Shen Yun performances, themes like spiritual devotion, the benevolence of gods, good and evil retribution, and the search for the meaning of life have appeared in Falun Gong-related dance stories and lyrics. These programs touch the heart and enlighten the mind,” according to Shen Yun’s website.
Watching the show, Mr. Fairbain said he got a message of “help out whenever I can and try to do good with everybody to make the world a much better place.”
Mr. Fairbain was particularly impressed by the solo performance of the Chinese two-stringed instrument, the erhu, in the show.
“I was saying to myself, while watching her [Xiaochun Qi, erhu soloist] play, boy, that is such a lovely instrument,” he said.
“It is so beautiful, the sound, when she hits all the notes and when she was playing it even free hand style as well, and then she pulled out the bow and was playing it as well. It was very beautiful.”
The soothing sound of erhu brought “immense” joy to Mr. Fairbain.
“I felt so much joy. It was very nice to listen to. It was literally music to your ears.”
Mr. Fairbain also marvelled at the vocal performances.
“Their voices carried and you heard every word. They enunciated. They pronounced every word … it was very nice to hear and very beautiful singing.”
Christine Anagnostou, who accompanied Mr. Fairbain to the show, said she also enjoyed the show.
“The performances were very precise and accurate, very colourful, very dramatic,” said Ms. Anagnostou, who is a lawyer.
“It was very enjoyable; it was relaxing,” she said.
