TAIPEI, Taiwan—Both of Mr. Li’s parents are high-ranking officials in China and hold power. He now teaches in a first-tier university in southern China. He’s heard great things about Shen Yun and wondered how it causes such a world sensation. Wanting to know the roots of Chinese culture and to find the hope of Chinese people, Li set foot in Taiwan on Feb. 20 with his friends and students.

Li found the schedule of Shen Yun online and arranged a trip here with his friends and students. He said Shen Yun has become a household name in China and everyone who can get on the Internet knows about it.

Li was a participant of the student revolution on Tiananmen Square in 1989. Under the influence of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), college students nowadays believe in neither Marxism nor gods, and don’t even have the least idea of traditional Chinese culture, Li said. With students buying their admission to college and their degrees, Mr. Li considered education in China a complete failure.

“China is a country with 5,000 years of civilization and is the birthplace of great philosophers. It has a glorious history enriched by Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, and concepts of divinity. These cultural heritages must be revived. We can’t afford to lose them,” Li said.

Li steered his conversation toward Shen Yun. “My students have often asked me what Shen Yun is. Some of them love Han couture, some like the Four Classical Novels. I know they can find what they want in Shen Yun. I admire Shen Yun—it’s the kind of beauty I have never seen. Shen Yun brings back the traditional Chinese culture and its roots, and human nature. It helps people understand all the wonderful virtues.”

Growing up in a house of high-ranking officials in China, Li is privileged but not spoiled. He could have lived a luxurious and material life, but he did not. He believes Shen Yun will give him the answers he has searched for.

Li and his company finally got to see the performance they had yearned for. Awed by its profundity, Li said, “I have never seen this style of performance, very impressive, especially the elegance displayed in dance. Feminine beauty and masculine power have the audience gasp in admiration. Their dance skills are so masterly and surpassed ordinary persons.

“Everything on stage, from costumes to lights, music, and backdrop, is indescribably beautiful. Han couture had been highly praised. Not until I saw Shen Yun costumes today did I know our traditional attire is so delicate and gorgeous. The culture passed down by our ancestors is really magnificent and tolerant, worth any effort to revive it.”

“Undoubtedly, the beauty, human nature, and divine glory presented by Shen Yun touched our hearts. Every religion in the West or Europe believes in divinity because it reflects a universal value. Watching Shen Yun allows me to know the essence of genuine Chinese culture. In my opinion, this kind [of divinely inspired culture] is absent in China.”

He concluded in delight, “Shen Yun is like a scroll of beautiful painting, in which a genuine China is depicted. Hope that Shen Yun can go back to China—the origin of divine culture.”
