VANCOUVER, Canada—Darren Deschamps and his family were whisked away on a visual tour of Chinese culture Saturday afternoon as they took in the Shen Yun Performing Arts show at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
Mr. Deschamps, the district manager for national clothing chain Northern Reflections, brought his family to the matinee show as a Christmas present.
He said Shen Yun “was everything we thought it would be.”
“It walked you through the whole culture of the Chinese culture, different parts of China, and the different dances and the different things that they celebrate,” he said, adding they will come to see the show again next year.
“You were really drawn into the country through the dances and the costumes.”
Mr. Deschamps was fascinated by Shen Yun’s story-based dances which are inspired by legends and true stories spanning China’s 5,000-year history up to today.
“The storytelling was very dramatic in showing the culture,” he said.
“So it really just brought you to that country and it was an amazing feeling to see the whole thing put together.”
New York-based Shen Yun was formed by overseas Chinese artists who wished to revive China’s divinely-inspired traditional cultural heritage through classical Chinese dance and music.
“I thought the show was brilliant,” said Mr. Deschamps. “The grace and the elegance of the production was amazing. The costumes were spectacular. Really showed the culture of China in a really nice way.”
He also appreciated the contrast between the powerful male dancers and the femininity of the females.
“The men’s moves were dramatic and the women’s moves were elegant and it just made the show fantastic,” he said.“The costumes, the dancing and the dance moves, and the precision that there was—it just was so graceful and elegant.”
