CINCINNATI—“Oh it was fantastic, beautiful, and uplifting!” exclaimed Margaret Holbert. The Vice President of the United Way of Greater Cincinnati joined the enthusiastic audience attending the Feb. 8 evening performance of Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Aronoff Center for the Arts.
Shen Yun travels the world on a mission to restore 5,000 years of divinely inspired civilization through staging grand performances that showcase classical Chinese dance.
Ms. Hulbert was touched by the spirituality she saw in the performances. She said “you could see the spiritual, you could see the historical, and it’s just beautiful. I mean the colors, the dancers, the talent was fantastic. It is just delightful!”
She elaborated, “What I loved was seeing the long history of spiritual involvement. I loved seeing the soldiers, which is another part of the culture. I loved seeing the backdrops, the summer palace, and all the things that we all love to see in China. And for me also seeing the variety of cultures, seeing dances that represented them, but also seeing the ethnic dances—that was a really lovely combination.”
She spoke enthusiastically of the way the hand-made costumes accentuate the over-all dance, noting the “beautiful work with the scarves and the sleeves—wonderful!”
New York-based Shen Yun brings to life China’s history, myths, and legends through classical Chinese dance, traditional folk and ethnic dances, and orchestral music which combines Western and Eastern instruments.
Like audience members world-wide, Ms. Holbert was especially impressed by the music. She said, “It was a wonderful blend of western and eastern, which I had not expected and how well it went together!”
