AUCKLAND, New Zealand—Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company ended a very successful tour of New Zealand with its last show in Auckland’s Civic Theatre, on Feb. 9.

The Saturday evening performance was the last chance, this year, for New Zealanders to experience authentic classical Chinese culture through dance and music, and many people took that opportunity.

Katja Meiran, a bank manager, had nothing but praise for the performers. “How they combined the Westernised music with traditional Chinese music was just unbelievable,” she said.

She was struck by the colours which lifted the performance. “It was really really amazing.”

“How they were able to run [and] you know catch the cloth,” she said in awe, describing how the dancers in the piece An Early Spring twirled their handkerchiefs, tossing them in the air and then catching them in full flight.

“I guess it was amazing to see the culture going and on, actually living on so many years,” said Ms. Meiran when she discovered that China’s culture was 5000 years old.

Accentuating the dance are digital backdrops, a unique orchestra that joins both Western and Chinese classical instruments, award-winning vocalists, and colorful, handmade costumes.

‘The dresses and the costumes—just amazing’

Leo De Graaf was also enjoying the New York-based Shen Yun’s presentation of Chinese culture Saturday evening.

“It’s very beautiful, very spectacular, very enjoyable, he said.

“I just loved the dancing, the dresses and the costumes—just amazing.”

The theatre stage comes to life when dancers dressed in colourful costumes perform dances from the different ethnic regions and dynasties of China.

Mr. De Graaf enjoyed the orchestral music which is a unique blending of instruments from a Western philharmonic orchestra and Chinese traditional instruments.
