SAN FRANCISCO—Shen Yun Performing Arts gave its first of seven performances at the SHN Orpheum Theatre on Wednesday, stunning audience members with a dazzling display of classical Chinese dance and culture.

“Just absolutely excellent, spectacular, graceful … beyond extraordinary!” said John Dutra, who is chairman of the board of a real estate investment company.

“Beautiful, incredibly entertaining, I couldn’t have enjoyed it more,” he added after watching the first half of Shen Yun.

The New York-based performing arts company brings audience members an exhilarating performance of classical Chinese dance—capturing the spirit of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.

Mr. Dutra was impressed with “the elegance of the dance and the story.” He said Shen Yun “has a profound message as well as being beautiful and glamorous and appealing.”

“I will most certainly recommend it to my friends,” said Mr. Dutra. He came out of the performance “with a sense of relaxation, a sense of just sheer enjoyment.”

Shen Yun will show from March 20–24 at the SHN Orpheum Theatre, with tickets in high demand. In January the company already gave sold-out performances in San Jose and Sacramento.

A proclamation of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, initiated by District 9 supervisor David Campos, said “Shen Yun presents the universal values—dignity, compassion, inclusion, courage, loyalty … which are just so important and beneficial to the modern society.”

“Shen Yun touches millions of hearts deeply, provokes righteousness and conscience, enlightens wisdom and nourish souls.”

Mayors from Oakland, Daly City, South San Francisco, Santa Clara, Mountain View, Redwood City, Sunnyvale, Novato, Piedmont, and Colma issued proclamations for Shen Yun’s upcoming performance in San Francisco.

“We are excited to see the return of this magnificent company to San Francisco and the Bay Area,” said the mayor of the city of Santa Clara, Jamie Matthews, in a proclamation.

“Shen Yun Performing Arts brings together some of the world’s foremost classically trained Chinese dancers, choreographers, musicians, and vocalists,” he said.

Vice Mayor of San Jose Madison Nguyen wrote in a statement that “Shen Yun has become the number one live performance sensation worldwide and has delighted, dazzled, and inspired audiences in over 100 cities on five continents.”

Shen Yun has performed every year in San Francisco since 2007. The last time it performed at the SHN Orpheum Theater was in 2008. Built in 1926, the Orpheum Theatre has been designated as a San Francisco Landmark.

Founded in 2006, Shen Yun has seen rapid growth—now performing with three companies, each featuring around 100 performers, around the world. Shen Yun currently performs simultaneously in North America, Europe, and Asia.

As a part of its 2013 world tour Shen Yun Performing Arts is performing in over 100 cities on five continents, gracing some of the world’s most prestigious stages such as New York’s Lincoln Center, Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center, and Paris’s Palais des Congrès de Paris.
