SAN JOSE, Calif.—After wanting to see Shen Yun Performing Arts for the past four years, Ms. Margarita Gaeta finally had a chance to see the New York-based performing arts company, showcasing classical Chinese dance and music. The retired cosmetology instructor attended a full-house performance of Shen Yun at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts on Jan. 6.
Ms. Gaeta said she especially appreciated the beauty of the costumes and hair ornaments of the dancers. “It was wonderful, beautiful,” she said.
Through classical Chinese dance, orchestral music, and colorful costumes, Shen Yun Performing Arts strives to revive 5,000 years of Chinese traditions and culture on stage, according to its website. Shen Yun boasts several award-winning dancers and musicians. Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company is one of three companies that tour simultaneously across the globe.
Ms. Gaeta enjoyed the state-of the art animated backdrops, which is another feature of a Shen Yun performance. She said she had never seen anything like it before. “I still don’t know how they did it, but it was beautiful, very different,” she said.
According to the Shen Yun website “these digital backdrop designs complement and synchronize all aspects of the performance: the characters, color of the costumes, specific dance movements, props, lighting, the story being told, particular notes played by the orchestra, and special audio effects.”
Ms. Gaeta said she was impressed how the performance was “perfect. They thought of everything.”
She bought an extra program booklet to give to her daughter-in-law and hopes she will be able to bring her grandchildren next time Shen Yun comes to town.
“It was great. I loved it, beautiful, and I look forward to coming again,” she said.
New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has three companies that perform simultaneously around the world. Shen Yun’s Touring Company will be in Vancouver until Jan. 13, while the New York Company will complete its tour of eastern Canada with five shows in Toronto from Jan. 17–20.
