Whether you’re protecting gold, prisoners, or secrets, the institution where they’re being stored needs to be incredibly secure. Technology, concrete, and armed guards can secure a structure. Place it in a mountain, desert, or permafrost region, and it’s pretty much guaranteed to be one of the most impenetrable places in the world. Here are the top six most secure locations on this planet.

1. Fort Knox is the Most Secure Vault in the World

The vast U.S. gold reserves are kept in Fort Knox, a secure location in Kentucky surrounded by a military camp. Anyone trying to steal this gold will have to go through a lot before even stepping foot in the structure. Once inside, there are blast-proof doors with electronic security locks. One more obstacle to overcome is a massive 250-ton vault door. Beyond that are more than 5,000 tons of gold.

2. NORAD & U.S. Space Command: Protected By Cheyenne Mountain

One of the most secure military installations on the planet is the Cheyenne Mountain complex. It is so secure that the structure within the mountain can survive a multi-megaton nuclear detonation within one nautical mile. The complex resides in Colorado and is home to the North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Space Command. Both were established during the Cold War.

3. Area 51 House Top-Secret Military Aircraft and Possibly Aliens

The mysterious U.S. Air Force base in the Nevada desert is believed to be used to test experimental aircraft. The base is so secretive that it isn’t on a map and finding it is nearly impossible. Only authorized personnel are able to enter the base and only a few people know what actually goes on there. The signs posted for miles around the base warn everyone to stay away.

4. ADX Florence Prison is the Most Secure Prison in the World

Some of the most notorious criminals and terrorists call ADX Florence prison in Colorado home. ADX stands for Administrative Maximum Security. It’s also known as Supermax or the Alcatraz of the Rockies. Attack dogs, 12-foot razor wire fences, remotely controlled steel doors, motion detectors, cameras, and pressure pads all contribute to keeping inmates in their cells and preventing them from escaping.

5. Svalbard Global Seed Vault is Actually The Fortress of Solitude

One of the most remote places on Earth is the permafrost region of Norway. There, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault sits 390-feet inside a mountain on Spitsbergen. It contains the seeds for every plant discovered. The seed library is kept to re-grow plants if they died out due to a global disaster. There are no roads that lead to this vault and the location is not available on maps.

6. Al Corbi’s House is the Most Secure House in the World

If you’re looking over home security systems reviews, check out Al Corbi’s house in Hollywood Hills. It features two panic rooms, bullet-proof windows, blast proof doors, and fully contained safe zones that lock down during emergencies, but still has access to kitchen and dining facilities, as well as a phone line.

These secure locations are virtually impenetrable, due to the importance of their contents. And it’s probably for the best that these locations keep their contents safely contained.
