NEW YORK—Professional stylist Chloe Badawy, and Rachel Karr, Director of Sales and Development for a New York bike tour company, saw Shen Yun Performing Arts at the David H. Kock Theatre on Thursday night. The two women were clearly taken by what they saw.
Ms. Badawy said she “loved everything,” while Ms. Karr felt the show was “breathtaking at every moment.”
“The little girl sitting next to me was six years old,” said Ms. Badawy. “She asked me what my favorite was and I said ‘No favorite’ love everything, so beautiful!”
Ms. Badawy felt that the show can be an inspiration to people in any profession, because of the sheer creativity of the costumes, music, and choreography.
“The music takes you somewhere else,” said Ms. Badawy of Shen Yun Performing Arts’ signature orchestra that adds Chinese instruments to a base formed by a classical European orchestra. “And then when the costumes come and the lights come, and their style of dance, it just takes you to another world.”
Ms. Karr was especially touched by the passion of the performers. This passion is referred to in Classical Chinese dance as “yun” or bearing—“a term that can best be described as a particular inner spirit,” according to Shen Yun’s webste.
“This is the most stunning, emotive thing that you’ll see for a long time. … It’s breathtaking at every moment,” said Ms. Karr.
The pair could not count all their favorite numbers: from dances to opera soloists, one experience kept on topping the others. When speaking of the lyrics displayed on the digital backdrop during the opera performances, both Ms. Karr and Ms. Badawy were moved.
“You’re a drop of water, and meeting someone could take three lifetimes,” said Ms. Karr, adding that it’s “the sort of things you need to realize when you wake up every day and manage life.”
Ms. Badawy thought that a ticket to a Shen Yun performance can “enrich your life in other ways than a material item.”
“A plane ticket to China is way more expensive, and you can’t even see this there. I think you should just do something that appeals to you, and if you want to do something just go for it, and don’t let fear, or money, hold you back,” said Ms. Badawy.
