HOUSTON—If there was a place where Krystin Mingez could go to learn all there is to know about China’s 5,000-year-old divinely inspired culture, she said she would attend. Ms. Mingez, a college student, actor and costume designer, was filled with inspiration after seeing Shen Yun Perform Arts’ presentation of classical Chinese dance and music, at Houston Jones Hall for the Performing Arts, New Year’s Eve. She was so delighted with what she saw that she wanted to learn more. “If there was a place where I can learn any of this cultural type of dance, even though it is not my culture, I would be happy to learn it, just to have it.”
Grateful for her Christmas present of a ticket to the performance, Ms. Mingez said she would definitely start by reading as much as possible of the “breath-taking stories.“
The performance moves quickly through regions, dynasties, myths and legends that Ms. Mingez said she found fascinating.
“See the amazing costumes, the dancing and how everything is so well put together is absolutely phenomenal, I have enjoyed every single moment.” She felt inspired to learn more.
“I don’t know many Chinese myths or stories, but it really got me interested,” she said. “I have always been interested in mythology but seeing their faces and how it was portrayed through dance … everything was phenomenal.”
Ms. Mingez praised the costumes, the choreography and the stories.
“I loved all the colors and the sleeves … all the dances and the dresses. I loved the monk … the humor and the expressions on their faces. [When Shaolin Monks Protected the Emperor]“
For thousands of years, Chinese artists cultivated virtue, believing that to create true art worthy of the heavens, there must first be inner purity. Today, Shen Yun’s artists follow this noble tradition. The result is a performance of consummate beauty, purity, and goodness. It is a show that nourishes the soul, according to the company website.
