HOUSTON—Business owner Hub Dixon saw traditional Chinese culture as Shen Yun Performing Arts presented and said it was something everybody could learn from.
Mr. Dixon, owner of HubTrucker, Inc., a full-service transportation and logistics provider, attended the performance at Jones Hall for Performing Arts in Houston with friends and family on Dec. 30.
“We enjoyed the show, I thought it really showed the culture, the morals, the ideas, the [spirituality]—I like it,” Mr. Dixon said.
Classical Chinese dance has a long history of 5,000 years, “soaking up profound wisdom from every era and dynasty,” a dance system that embodies traditional Chinese values—exactly what the New York-based company seeks to revive, its website says.
Mr. Dixon said he thought the performance showed “how to live with respect, morals and honor.”
‘Mind over matter’
The heart and soul of the culture touched many of the audience members in the once-again packed theater at Jones Hall.
Mr. Larry Wilkins, who works in business development, was amazed by the “mind over matter” aspect he drew from Shen Yun’s presentation of Chinese culture.
“They can do more from their inner soul than anybody that I know, it’s amazing,” Mr. Wilkins said.
“Inner soul,” or “bearing,” is an integral part of classical Chinese dance, says the website.
“I love the fact that they are able to express the culture and beauty of China, and very free-spirited, I like that, the spirit of it,” said Mrs. Janie Wilkins, a history teacher.
“I love the fact that they were able to express what they really felt, that they could do that here, because I don’t know if they can do that at home or not,” she said. “I love that they are letting us understand it, be a part of it.”

‘A Christmas Present’
Also in the audience was Mrs. Elsa Rocha, who received tickets to the show as a Christmas present from her two young daughters.
“This is what I wanted for Christmas, and that’s what they got me,” said Mrs. Rocha. “We like to see live shows, especially if it’s a different culture, and I wanted them to see it.”
“It was a very rich culture, very old, I enjoyed it.”
New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has three touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world. Shen Yun’s International Company will be performing in Houston through January 1. For more information, visit ShenYunPerformingArts.org
