COLUMBUS, Ohio—“Absolutely beautiful,” said Mary Hall after seeing the first half of Shen Yun Performing Arts’s performance at the Ohio Theatre on Feb. 10. “It’s a wonderful birthday present from my husband.”
“I’ve never been to anything like this before, so just to experience this …. This is something we’ve never seen before and we go to a lot of shows, this is very unique, but I do enjoy it,” said Ms. Hall, a contracting officer for army transport.
Ms. Hall’s unique experience can be attributed to the unique aim of New York-based Shen Yun. “For 5,000 years divine culture blossomed in the land of China. Humanity’s treasure was nearly lost, but through captivating music and dance, Shen Yun is bringing this divine culture back to life,” states the company’s website.
Ms. Hall had not seen Shen Yun before and was impressed with just the costumes alone. “I read that there were 500 handmade costumes. I thought that was …, I mean just to take the time to do that! And then the digital effects, too, were very nice and the music, it’s just wonderful,” Ms. Hall said.
The website states that Shen Yun “features the world’s foremost classically trained dancers, a unique orchestra blending the sounds of both East and West, breathtaking backdrops, splendid costumes, singers” when describing its many facets.
For Ms. Hall, all of these facets together produced “what Oprah says is a ‘Wow!—Ah-ha moment’! That is what it is,” she summed up.
