SAN JOSE, Calif.—Seeing Shen Yun perform at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts on Jan. 5 was an overwhelming experience for Trevor Thorpe.
“I think it’s beautiful. I think it’s absolutely beautiful. The cultural aspects, the artistic aspects of it, everything about it has been overwhelming,” said Mr. Thorpe, who is the managing director of several branches in the East Bay of CBRE, the global leader in real estate services.
Shen Yun performed for a full house on Saturday night. The New York-based company has the mission to revive 5,000 years Chinese culture.
“The dancing obviously, is incredible, but the singing I think is very impressive. The soprano, she just has a beautiful voice,” Mr. Thorpe said.
Shen Yun’s vocal soloists use bel canto vocal technique while singing Chinese lyrics. According to the Shen Yun website “the singer must grasp the highly difficult technical requirements of bel canto operatic singing while retaining the proper Chinese articulation and diction—today, this is unparalleled.”
Ms. Amy, who saw the performance with Mr. Thorpe, said that as a native of China she appreciated that Shen Yun presents Chinese culture.
“It is able to present and share the very valuable Chinese culture in the United States and that is a very worthy cause,” she said.
“The performers are also phenomenal, world class.”
Shen Yun takes the audience on a magical journey through China’s rich history. The company was established in 2006 and since then has performed for millions of audience members around the world.
“I would describe it as something that somebody from outside the culture should come and experience and to see the different dynasties,” Mr. Thorpe said.
